What does a Periodontist do?
Periodontists are specialized dentists who have spent an additional two to three years learning about soft tissues, structures and gums. As working professionals, they specialize in the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of gum disease and are qualified in the field of dental implants. As experts in gum care, periodontists treat periodontal disease as well as esthetically modify gums in order to give a patient the healthiest, brightest smile. Generally, patients who are referred to this field of dentistry either suffer from gum disease, periodontal concerns, structural issues (such as bone loss), missing teeth (for dental implants) or soft tissue issues. Due to the advances in dentistry, implant technology has revolutionized the field of Periodontics.
It has been estimated that eighty percent of Americans have been affected by some form of gum disease. (Source: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research)
