Denture is a removable dental appliance for missing teeth and the tissues which are connected to those teeth. It is made of acrylic resin and in some cases,a combination of various metals. It not only improves the chewing ability and speech but also provides the support for facial muscles. With the use of dentures a person can acheive enhanced facial appearance and smile.
There are primarily four types of dentures:
- Complete -This type of denture is used for people who have lost most or all of their teeth.
- Partial-This denture is recommended for those who have some natural teeth remaining and they act as a bridge between the missing tooth or teeth.
- Conventional-In this type of denture all of the teeth are extracted before the dentures are placed in the mouth. Placing conventional dentures requires a recovery time of usually 4 to 8 weeks.
- Immediate-This type of dentures does not require a healing period after all teeth are removed. The denture is immediately placed into the mouth after all the teeth are removed. Some additional adjustments may be necessary in the fitting of these type of dentures as healing occurs.
The denture process takes around one month and five appointments. While most patient can begin to speak normally within few hours, many report discomfort with eating for several days to a few weeks. To get accustomed to chewing with new dentures, soft and easy to chew food is recommended. Also it is advised to wear dentures constantly during the first two weeks even while sleeping.
Researches have shown that removing dentures for at least eight hours during the day or night allows the gum tissues to rest, normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva which promotes the better long term health of gum's. Simultaneously it is important to continue having regular dental checkups so that dentist can examine oral tissues for signs of oral diseases.
